Water Lily

11 1/2 x 15 - SOLD
A surprise awaited me on an early morning walk along a Minnesota River Valley trail. As the road narrowed and bent to the right, there on either side of the path lay a pond, its shallows lined with bulrushes, slow moving herons, and red-winged blackbirds perched atop tall cattails. Hundreds of species of plants and animals of all sizes lived in this marvelous ecosystem. The most striking part was the myriad floating lily pads and the bobbing lilies scattered like sparkling jewels throughout the weedy water. Their showy white petals contrasted against the teal blue water, and the July sun cast their exquisite shadows onto the water’s rough surface. Hidden beneath all of this lay the flowers’ tangle of thick, fleshy stems, often five feet deep, that buried their feet into the pond’s mucky bottom.

The lily, long considered a symbol of purity in many cultures, is truly more than just a vision of beauty and perfection as she makes her home in this marvelous ecosystem. She has a richness that goes far beyond her outward beauty, one that is deep and nourishing like her long stalks. She is the great giver of this pond; her underwater stems provide a safe habitat for largemouth bass and sunfish, and her flower seeds are food for many waterfowl. How much we can learn from this jewel of the marsh about the value of one’s hidden inner qualities that do so much to enrich the lives of those around us.
