Study in Silver and Red

12 x 15 1/2 - AVAILABLE
I've always loved the look of sterling silver. Patterns and reflections cast onto its surface fascinate me, so when I set up this still life of the two silver dishes and strawberries I instantly fell in love with what I saw. The drama that unfolded was spectacular as the south sun came through my studio window. It created the most intricate black, silver and red patterns on the long-stemmed silver dish that sat next to the smooth unadorned bowl. The tall richly designed piece belonged to my grandmother and I have fond memories of it being lovingly used on special occasions; the plain squat bowl came from a second-hand shop and was a stranger to me with no history, no stories to tell. These two pieces were so unalike in all ways, yet perfectly compatible. They are much like two strangers meeting with no seeming likenesses, yet becoming instant friends. It is a reminder of the need for looking beyond outward appearances when making new acquaintances and forming opinions!
