Autumn Leaves

13 1/2 x 10 1/2 - SOLD
As I walked in the Carleton Arboretum one October afternoon I was struck by the brilliance of the colors seen along the trail. The pin oak leaves were splashed with vibrant reds, oranges and greens, and the bright sun created glistening white patterns on their shiny surfaces. I became incredibly aware of yet another marvel of nature as she orchestrated this magnificent color show for me. As the days of fall grow shorter and the nights get cooler, she signals to the trees that it is time to stop the flow of sugar sap that flows through the leaves' veins, downward into the trunks and branches. It is time to rest and live off the stored food. Now the green colors of spring and summer begin to fade, unmasking the fiery palette of autumn's colors that have been hidden beneath the surface all along.

As we mature through the seasons of our lives, we often go through a similar changing of colors as well. We are able to let go of outward appearances, layer by layer, revealing a depth and richness of character and talents not seen before. It is a time when one's true colors shine through like the gorgeous shades of autumn leaves.
